Dear Au pair,
We are a family of five (our 3 kids are aged 12, 9 and 6. We’re looking for an Au Pair to come and stay with us for a year starting in August, to be part of our family and teach us a bit about their culture, as well as to play with and look after our kids after school and on some school holidays. Our kids are very well behaved, they love sport, movies, playing in the local park and playgrounds. A bit about us: we work in Dublin city 9-5 Monday to Friday, Dave works in new product development and Triona is an accountant. We are very relaxed and informal and would like to make an Au Pair feel very welcome and part of the family. During time off we love to get out and about the local parks and mountain walks, go to the cinema, local restaurants and shopping centres, as well as running, cycling and swimming. We both love music, movies, reading and cookery.
We live in Dundrum which is a lovely small town in South County Dublin. It is a short walk to one of Europe’s biggest shopping centres, a 15-min walk from the Luas (a tram system) that can take you to the city centre in 20 mins, with trams running every 5-10 mins. Nearby is Marlay Park, a beautiful park and concert venue in the foothills of Dublin Mountains. Just beyond that is the start of the Wicklow Way, a famous waymarked trail that crosses the Dublin and Wicklow mountains. There are loads of nice coffee bars, pubs and restaurants nearby, yet where we live is a quiet and peaceful spot. There is a great swimming pool and various gyms nearby. We are only a few miles from the coast where you can do sailing, windsurfing and water sports, though you’ll need a wetsuit for much of the year!
We are looking for someone to help getting our kids ready for school and to walk them to school and to collect them and look after them until we get home (about 6 / 6:15 pm) and make sure they eat something, so your mornings and evenings and weekends will nearly always be free. We would like you to help them with their homework and cook a meal for them around 5 pm. Overall we would expect this to add up to a 25-30 hour week on average, but some weeks it will be a bit more and other weeks a bit less. If we end up going over, we would pay extra for this, and we would agree this with you weekly.
When you bring them home we will need you to look after them and make sure they do their homework, play with them if there is time, and then prepare a simple / light meal for them. We don’t expect you to cook every day, perhaps 3 to 4 days. Generally in the last two years our Au Pair has cooked 3 days a week, and occasionally 4 if the kids have a match or event they need to get to on the fourth evening. We will always look after the cooking on weekends. We only need light housework, to clean up after yourself and after the kids while you are minding them (for example running the hoover over the kitchen floor after they eat). We don't expect you to hoover the whole house or to do any ironing.
In terms of accomodation we have a double room for you.
There will be some days when either the kids have a day off school, or one of them is sick, when we would need you to mind them for the full day, if neither of us could take the day off work, this would be the exception and in general we will try to manage our holidays from work to coincide with when our kids are off. If there are unplanned days when we ask you to mind them we would pay you extra for your time. Also if you would like to babysit occasionally on evenings if you are free we would pay you separately for this.
